Suzuki NIGHT of the JUMPS Riga
Story and pics by Oliver Franke

Bizouard beats current FMX World Champion Gaup and makes a huge step for the title.

Riga, 25th Oktober 2008: Remi Bizouard beat current World Champion Ailo Gaup with a spectacular run and made a huge step for the FIM Freestyle MX World Championships title 2008. Gaup himself did an amazing run, which puts him on 2nd position ahead of Libor Podmol.

11 riders came to Riga for the Suzuki NIGHT of the JUMPs. Big surprise was the comeback of Norways Ailo Gaup, who had a 10 month absence from the IFMXF track. The current World Champion was highly motivated and impressed with a strong qualification run, putting him on second position equal on points with Bizouard. Massimo Bianconcini, Brice Izzo, Libor Podmol and Brody Wilson followed them into the final. Steve Mini, who crashed in Cologne, did a really good run, missing the final only by five points. German Fabian Bauersachs was even closer. He missed the final only by one point.

The final of the 8th contest of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championship couldn’t be more spectacular. After the qualifying current World Championd and the leader of the FMX World Championship 2008 were equal on points. But before the big showdown the crowd saw Ailo Gaups win at the whip contest and Libor Podmols in the highest air.

Final was opened by Massimo Bianconcini. First time he presented the Superman Seatgrab flip on the IFMXF track. Libor Podmol put a flip fireworks into his final run. He did No-Hand-Flip, Tsunami Flip, Switchblade Flip, Cliffhanger Flip, Underflip and SuperFlip Indy. This brought him on 3rd position. Brice Izzo did a Shaolin Flip in the double up, but only reached 5th place. Same to Brody Wilson. He did a Switchblade flip first time, but lost one place and and ende up 4th.

Then it came to the showdown between Gaup and Bizouard. Both did massive runs with extrem extensions and hard flip combos. Finally the win went to Bizouard, who made a huge step for the World Champion title 2008. He now leads with 40 points ahead of André Villa. Libor Podmol now is on 3rd position.

Next points of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championship will be given on sunday at the 2nd day of the Suzuki NIGHT of the JUMPs in Riga.

Suzuki NIGHT of the JUMPs Riga - Sunday

Remi Bizouard did it. With both winnings of the Suzuki NIGHT of the JUMPs in Riga he reached FMX World Champion. On sunday Bizouard won in a spectacular final and put two times Vice World Champion Libor Podmol and FIM Freestyle MX World Champion 2007 Ailo Gaup on 2nd and 3rd position.

For the 9th contest of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championship 7.000 people came to the Arena Riga. And already in the qualification it was high voltage. As on saturday Brice Izzo, Brody Wilson, Libor Podmol, Ailo Gaup and Remi Bizouard made their way into the final. This day Italian Massimo Bianconcini did not make it. Therefore Fredrik Johansson got into the field of final riders.

Bianconcini won the Whip Contest ahead of Lukas Weis and Steven Mini. Gilles Dejong got 1st in Highest Air. But all this was not important. All eyes in Riga were focussed on Remi Bizouard, Libor Podmol and Fredrik Johansson. Could the French guy be ahead of them, or could Podmol or Johansson be ahead? Johansson pushed his run and with tricks like Stripper, Cordova Flip and Switchblade he put him self on 5th position ahead of Brody Wilson.

Libor Podmol again started a backflip fireworks with Cliffhanger Flip, Switchblade Flip, Tsunami Flip, No-Hand-Flip and 1-Hand Underflip in the double-up. This put him ahead of Ailo Gaup, FMX World Champion 2007.

So it was up to Remi Bizouard and he pushed it to the limit. With No-Hand-Flip, Switchblade to Switchblade Flip, Cliffhanger Flip and Ruler Flip in the Double-Up he put himself on top. With both winnings the French guy grabbed the FIM Freestyle MX World Champion. On not only that. The World Champion title brought him the brandnew NIGHT of the JUMPs Suzuki Swift Sport on top.

So the last two contests take place in Namibia on 29th November and Brasil on 13th December 2008. There we will see if Czech Libor Podmol will reach the Vice World Champion title third time in a row.
