NIGHT of the JUMPs Ostrava
Story and pics by Oliver Franke

Ostrava, 06th November 2009: The 9th contest of the NIGHT of the JUMPs / FIM Freestyle MX World Championships could have been go down in history as the „Night of Premiere“.

For the first time the IFMXF held a contest in Ostrava and this with three Czech riders. Tomas Lysaceck had a solid run on his NIGHT of the JUMPs debut. Petr Pilat reached his first IFMXF final. And when Libor Podmol came on 2nd place on the podium, only beaten by World Champion Remi Bizouard, the Czech crowd in Vitkovice arena freaked out. So this might have been the perfect atmosphere for Scott Murray to land the first time ever Double Backflip on the NIGHT of the JUMPs ground. But unfortunately the American crashed at the landing and had to bring to hospital. But as known so far, he only has a broken hand.

Due to virus infection Massimo Bianconcini could not start. So 11 riders out of seven nations fought for the finals. Steve Mini and Fabian Bauersachs only missed it by a few points. The same applied to Tomas Lysaceck, Hannes Ackermann and William van den Putte. Next to the French riders Remi Bizouard and Brice Izzo, two Czech riders reached the finals: Libor Podmol and Petr Pilat. Brody Wilson and Jose Miralles completed the field of riders in the next round.

Czech triumph at the Race-and-Style and Highest Air contest: Libor Podmol won both challenges and received the prices from Ales Buska, LR Health and Beauty CEO and national promoter of the NIGHT of the JUMPs in Czech Republic.

Petr Pilat opened the final. With Stripper Flip, Can Flip to SideSattle-Landing the 18 year-old Czech rider did an amazing program. Due to a deadsailor he only reached 6th position. Brice Izzo put his perfect well-know flips, but today it was not enough for the podium. The same applied to Brody Wilson.

Jose Miralles didn’t any new trick, but his known program in perfection and landed on 3rd place. Then the playground was set for Libor Podmol. And the Czech audience pushed him to the limit, so he did Stripper Flip and Can Underflip. But there was still one rider to go. And the World Champion Remi Bizouard did his amazing run unimpressed and took the win with most World Cup points.

In the overall ranking of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championship Remi Bizouard leads with 21 points ahead of Jose Miralles. Libor Podmol moved forward on 3rd position. In the manufacturers ranking Yamaha now has a lead of 34 points to KTM. Next points of the World Championships will be given tomorrow on the 2nd day of the NIGHT of the JUMPs in Ostrava.

2nd day of the NIGHT of the JUMPs Ostrava with the 10th round of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championships.

Again the crowd freaked out, when the 11 FMX athletes battled for the finals. The riders thanked the audience by pushing the level even higher. William van den Putte pulled a Deadbody to No-Hand-Landing, but even did not make it into the finals. Steve Mini crashed his first trick due to a damaged engine. So all the riders from yesteray reached the finals, but now with Libor Podmol laeding the qualifying ahead of Remi Bizouard.

Podmol also dominated both side contests. After winning the Race and Style he jumped over 10 meters in the Highest Air.

Local boys Libor Podmol and Petr Pilat ruled the finals with a flip firework, Pilat hammered Candybar Flip, Switchblade Flip, Shaolin Flip and Can Underflip in the air. Podmol pulled Tsunami Flip, Cliffhanger Flip, No-Hand Flip, Underflip Indy and first time ever a not extended Superman Seatgrab Flip. Libor rode hard for the first place, but was a bit nervous and made small mistakes. So he gave the win to Remi Bizouard, who looked smooth and perfect in every trick. Brice Izzo jumped on 3rd place of the podium.

With his second victory in Ostrava World Champion Bizouard made a huge step to defend his title and now leads with 27 points to Miralles. The Spaniard has to be aware of Libor Podmol, who is only 1 point behind and still has chances to win the World Championship. In the manufacturers ranking Yamaha still is on top of the field, followed by Suzuki.

The premiere of the NIGHT of the JUMPs in Ostrava was a big success. 13.000 spectators wanted to see the world’s best FMX riders in their fight for the World Championships. Upcoming weekend the riders will meet again at the NIGHT of the JUMPs Zagreb for the next rounds of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championships.
